Archbishop Thompson Statement about Immigration Enforcement

The recent surge in immigration enforcement activity in Indiana has caused fear and uncertainty for many families, particularly when detention results in the sudden separation of parents and children. While recognizing the need for law enforcement to protect and defend, it is gravely concerning to witness families being torn apart. The family, the fabric of stability in our society, must be cherished and defended. The inherent dignity of being created in the image of God demands that every person be treated with dignity, compassion, and respect.

Nurse's Health Reminder

As we are seeing an increase in illness, we kindly ask families to monitor their students closely and use their best judgment when deciding whether to send them to school.

Please keep your student home if they are experiencing symptoms that may prevent them from comfortably participating in the school day or could potentially spread illness to others. Students should return to school when they are feeling well enough to participate in normal activities and are following the school’s health guidelines.

Reporting an Absence

If your student will be absent from school due to illness or an appointment, please call the Absence Line at 317-255-7153, ext. 119 .

When leaving a message, please include:

Student’s first and last name
Teacher’s name
Reason for the absence

Notes from the Office:

All Choice Scholarship parent signatures are due no later than Tuesday. If you do not sign you will lose your scholarship money for tuition. Come to the office to sign your papers.

All 2nd and 3rd grade parents have a meeting to discuss literacy and IREAD. The meeting begins at 5:45 PM on Wednesday, August 26th . 2nd grade parents will meet in the Holy Family Room, 3rd grade parents will meet in St. Augustine Hall.

We need volunteers - On Wednesday from 3:00 PM-4:00 PM we need help with cleaning up our property. Please meet at the main entrance and our sustainability club will provide you with directions and support. This counts toward your 10 required volunteer hours.

Reminder : Every Thursday is a 1:00 PM dismissal.

Mum Sale

Our Fall Mum Fundraiser continues this week. We are raising money to fund our RCA House System. Proceeds will help cover the cost of house meetings and events throughout the year. All orders (with money) are due Monday, August 31st . You will be able to pick up mums Thursday, September 10th from 12:30 - 5:30 near the school office.

Chess Club

This program is great for ALL levels, kindergarten through 8th grade. Weekly classes are being offered at St. Monica during lunch and recess, the week of August 27th through October 8th . Learning Through Games has taught Multiple State Champion Scholastic Teams. However they are best known for their fun style of teaching! Cost is $66. Click Here to Register

Message from the Principal

UNIFORMS - PLEASE REVIEW

Students are doing well with following the dress code. Please remember that your child in Kindergarten through 8th grade must wear a St. Monica School Logo shirt or sweatshirt to Mass each week. CLICK HERE to order yours if you do not already have one.

Cargo pants and shorts are not permitted at St. Monica. If your child is wearing cargo pants or shorts they will need to change. Cargo pants and shorts have external pockets which are not approved.

SCHOOL MASS

We want and welcome you to attend Mass as a family. We are grateful for all who attend weekly and want to continue to support your faith journey. We have a new seating arrangement for families wanting to sit with their children at Mass that started last week. Thanks to everyone who followed those directions. Please know that if you arrive after Mass has started your child will need to remain with the class. You are welcome to sit with their class or in the other designated spaces.

No one should leave for any reason other than an emergency once the Gospel has begun. Thank you.

The CYO Chess Team returns to St. Monica!

Coach Chap from Indy Chess is excited to run it on Mon day afternoons from to August 19, 2026 to December 14, 2026 from 3:00pm to 4:10pm. Students in grades 1st to 8th grade are eligible to participate, and the program meets in the Holy Family Room (pick up kids at the main school entrance) on any day that school is in session. The cost is $149 per semester. Students in the chess program have the option to compete on the St. Monica CYO Chess Team with Wednesday matches in October and a big tournament on Saturday, November 14! School begins August 11 and we are looking forward to everyone attending St. Monica this year. Attendance is a priority of St. Monica School and the State of Indiana. On time daily attendance is a factor in student success. Please plan to leave your residence on time to arrive prior to 7:40AM. We will be in the lots starting Tuesday to help guide everyone in following our traffic patterns. Please arrive with patience as we help those who need our assistance.

School Office Hours

The school office is open from 9:00am -1:00pm Monday -Thursday and closed on Friday.

Welcome Packets

Your welcome packets for the 2026-2027 school year went home with your child before school concluded. Please remember to sign and return the various papers in the packet soon. We would like all paperwork turned in by June 15th.

If you need to drop off paperwork but do not need to speak to someone in the school office, the parish office is open from 8:00am-4:30pm, Monday-Friday.

Staff Lounge Remodeling

We want to redo the staff lounge to update it and make it more comfortable for our staff while they are on break during the school day. Do you want to help? Contact Mr. Schommer at e.schommer@smsindy.org if you would like to be a part of the remodeling. Together we can make it a super place to reset. We need people that are good with construction and licensed electricians as well.

I have served as President of St. Monica PTO for the past two years, following active involvement a couple of years earlier. It has been a pleasure getting to know so many St. Monica families and staff through this experience. PTO is a group of imperfect people who believe in the good work of our school community. My time in PTO leadership is coming to an end, and while we have a strong core, it's a very small group. PTO seeks:

Shanette Gibbs Leadership Award

The Shanette Gibbs Memorial Leadership Award is named for the late Shanette Wright-Gibbs who passed away in August of 2018 after a courageous battle with cancer. She was a consummate leader, always willing to step up and help wherever she was needed. Shanette valued the PTO Leadership Award and loved serving on the selection committee because she knew how important strong leadership qualities are in our young people.

PTO had the opportunity to interview candidates for the Shanette Gibbs Memorial Leadership Award. Candidates were nominated by middle school teachers. The winner of the $1000 scholarship will be announced at the 8th Grade Mass and Graduation on May 27, but we would like to thank and congratulate all who completed the process and interviewed with PTO on May 4:

Help Give Our Teachers a True Lunch Break

We are looking for parent volunteers to help cover recess and lunch duty on Wednesday May 6th so our staff can enjoy a well-deserved, uninterrupted break. Times for recess and lunch are included next to each teacher's name.

During the school day, teachers often spend their “lunch” time rushing to use the restroom, make copies, check their mailbox, and quickly eat. By volunteering, you are giving them the gift of a few peaceful moments to recharge, something that truly makes a difference in their day and in the care they provide to our students. You can sign up to cover one or both of the sessions for your child's homeroom teacher.

Thank you for supporting our teachers in such a meaningful way—we couldn’t do it without you!

St. Monica School Families,

In the past couple weeks we have had several situations that warrant reminders. Please make sure you use our provided resources to ensure that you are following our procedures. CLICK HERE for our resource page that has information on the dress code, family handbook, drop off and pick up procedures, and expectations of parents and students.

OFFICE DISMISSAL

We do not dismiss from the office from 2:45-3:15 on regular days and 12:45-1:15 on 1:00 dismissal days. This is for safety and supervision reasons. You can find this information in our family handbook on the cover page of both family guides and in English on page 6 and also on page 6 in Spanish. It is also posted on the main entrance to the school.

SCHOOL START TIME

Our school day starts at 7:45AM and ends at 3PM. Students are expected to be here by 7:40AM in order to prepare for the school day. This information can be found on our parent expectations form and in our handbooks on pages 3, 4, and 5.

St. Monica is now registering current families for next school year. CLICK HERE for the registration form. To hold your child's place for next year, you must register and pay the registration fee no later than midnight on January 26th, 2026. All spaces will be open to new families starting January 27th.

The link is only for current families. This is not a link to share with families that currently do not attend St. Monica. They have a different enrollment process, different registration fees, and access to different grade levels. We will share that link online starting January 27th.

IndyPL’s Fall Fest Slammin’ Rhymes Challenge

IndyPL’s Fall Fest Slammin’ Rhymes Challenge is coming up on Saturday, November 15th at Central Library. This contest is for poets, rappers, and spoken word artists in grades 6-12 and the theme this year is ‘Strength.’ This is a great opportunity for students to share their work with a broader audience, and all entries will receive a gift card for their participation. The deadline for entry is Thursday, October 30th, 2025.

Volunteer Needed

The Social Emotional Learning team is in need of a volunteer. The volunteer would laminate and cut out several items for a project. This can all be done at the volunteer's home, as the laminator is portable. All materials will be provided. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Allison Boyll at a.boyll@smsindy.org . Thank you for considering.

Updated Dress Code

Khaki and Navy skirts and skorts have been added as well as logo 1/4 zip sweatshirts.

Please remember:

Students cannot wear polo, nike, Lacoste, or other logo shirts.
All shirts and sweatshirts at Mass must have our logo. Starting Wednesday, October 1st, all students must wear logo shirts to Mass.
Out of uniform is not allowed on Mass days.
Only white solid shirts can be worn under the uniform shirt. No other colors are allowed.
Socks, tights, and leggings must be solid white, red, navy blue, or black. No other colors are allowed.

School Pictures

Our NEW Code Lookup Tool is now available. They can simply scan the QR code and follow the directions to access their child's picture ordering gallery. No need to contact Customer Service for an access code! *Student last name and Student ID number will be required for data security.* If at any time your parents or guardians have questions about the Code Lookup or are having difficulty navigating the site, they can still reach out to our Customer Service team via the Live Chat on our website, www.strawbridge.net

SMS PTO is proud to recognize teachers and staff with a lunch. A potato and salad bar, back by popular demand, and a hydration station will be set that day. Take a moment to share a note of thanks with your child's teachers.

October 3 - Fall Family Fun Night - Gym - 6:30 - 8:30 pm

Line dancing for all - whether you wobble, shuffle, and slide or just enjoy the vibe, come out to an all-ages line dance event. Dance-themed literacy activities will also be hosted. Free to attend, food and fans for purchase

October 14 - Take Out Tuesday @ BRICS (Broad Ripple Ice Cream Station)

Last month's Take Out Tuesday at Puccini's raised $175!

October 13 - 24 - Read-a-thon - PTO's biggest fundraising goal of the year!

Information will come home in backpack mail in October. Watch for emails from Donations4Education.

Step 1: Register your child's account

Step 2: Share their personalized fundraising link with family and friends to reach the fundraising goal - $30/student ($10,000 school-wide)

Step 3: Read and log minutes read - for every appropriate level book completed the student will put their name on a book's spine in the school cafeteria

We’re excited to announce that the PTO is hosting our first Teacher Appreciation event of the year on Monday, September 29, 2025! To show our amazing teachers and staff just how much we appreciate them, we’ll be serving a Baked Potato Bar and Salad Bar. If you’d like to contribute items, please sign up HERE .
