You are required to create a safe environment for your family and your community. In this time when our community is experiencing a pandemic, please remember several of our Catholic social teachings and how they should frame your thoughts and responses in 2021:

  • A Call to Family, Community, and Participation - Seeking together the common good of all, especially the poor and vulnerable. Wear a face covering and follow the screening directions to keep you and those around you healthy.
  • Options for the Poor and Vulnerable - We are charged with putting the needs of the poor and vulnerable first. Wear a face covering and follow the screening directions to keep you and those around you healthy.
  • The Dignity of Work and Rights of Workers - Work is a form of continuing participation in God's creation. Basic rights of workers must be respected including a safe work environment. Wear a face covering and follow the screening directions to keep you and those around you healthy.
  • Solidarity - We are one human family whatever our national, racial, ethnic, economic, and ideological differences. We are our brothers and sisters keepers, wherever they may be. Wear a face covering and follow the screening directions to keep you and those around you healthy.
  • Care for God’s Creation - We show our respect for the Creator as a requirement of our faith. We are called to protect people and the planet, living our faith in relationship with all of God’s creation. Wear a face covering and follow the screening directions to keep you and those around you healthy.

Middle School Enrichment

Lunch time last year was 50 minutes and students remained in their room until the last month of the year when they were allowed to go outside for a walk after eating. We have created a new 65 minute block that allows for necessary remediation, much needed movement, and student choices.  If you have more questions on how your child can best utilize this time, please contact Mrs. Boyll or Ms. Diaz.

Parents,

We are excited to share a new enrichment program for our middle school students.

It is our commitment to students to find gaps in academic achievement and take necessary steps to minimize those gaps, while simultaneously focusing on the needs of students at and above grade-level. Our goal with implementing an enrichment program is to provide time outside of core instruction to meet the support and enrichment needs of all students.

Each day once lunch is complete, time will be designated to provide specific support for all students. In an effort to empower students to advocate for their needs, students will have the choice to choose an academic enrichment or movement enrichment. Academic enrichment will provide support for students in specific subject areas.  Teachers will also have the ability to place students into academic enrichment areas for additional support.  Academic enrichment will be limited to three days per week, giving students the opportunity to also participate in movement enrichment activities the other two days. Students will be able to choose between three different types of “movement” classrooms. These include: outside/playground, indoor board games/cards, and a quiet room where some students feel they decompress a little better with quiet time. In the quiet room, students may read, pray, color, listen to music with headphones, meditate, etc.  Enrichment opportunities are included below.  These options are fluid and may change to meet the needs of students.

Students may sign up for enrichment by 12:00 each day via our electronic sign up sheet.  If a student abuses this privilege, they will no longer be able to self-select enrichment.  For example, if a teacher places the student in an academic enrichment, the student is not permitted to move themselves to an alternate activity.

Options include Math, ELA, Writing Lab, Social Work, Executive Functioning/Organization/Grade check in/ELL support, Physical Activity outside, Indoor activies such as board games, cards, and prayer, Art, Drawing, and Spanish.

We appreciate your support in your child’s learning and look forward to working with your child this year.  Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact Ms. Diaz, School Social Worker at j.diaz@smsindy.org or Mrs. Boyll, Social Emotional Learning Coach at a.boyll@smsindy.org.

Sincerely,

Jacqueline Diaz, School Social Worker
