Eagle Update January 14, 2021

Donations

If you have access to Clorox type wipes or facial tissues we are in need. We realize this is difficult to ask since our suppliers are unable to get them for us. Thank you for your consideration.

Giving Garden

Did you know that Mrs. Harrison’s participation with the Giving Garden was invaluable? She guided and participated in ground prep, planting, harvesting, distributing to food pantries, distributing to our food service, and teaching teachers and parents.  Thank you Catherine for your service with our Giving Garden ministry.

Student Device Update

We applied and received approval for our GEER grant in late september. Today we received approval to purchase the 60 devices for PK-2nd grade using the GEER Grant funding. They were ordered at 10:27AM today and should arrive sometime in the next week.

Flood Update

Our flood in the middle of December impacted most of the lower level. All classrooms, hallways, and the food prep areas are completed at this time. The remediation company is working to restore use of the library, cafeteria, and computer lab. The Title 1 room should be completed by the end of next week. Multiple carpet squares were replaced in 3 classrooms and full carpet replacement was completed in 1 classroom.   New carpet is being installed in the computer lab and library.  We are hopeful that the computer lab will be usable by the middle of next week while the library still requires delivery of new shelves prior to use. The cafeteria is mostly complete but is being used as storage for the library materials.

Read-A-Thon - Starts January 20th

St. Monica Catholic School is excited to start our 4th annual Read-A-Thon!

The Read-A-Thon is motivating students to read more, both in the classroom and at home by pairing reading with a reward system.

Participating students will all receive a St. Monica bookmark. Students receiving $15 in donations will receive a St. Monica draw string back pack with an out of uniform pass and students receiving $50 in donations and reaching their reading goal will be entered into a drawing to win an Amazon Kindle.

Best of all, all participating* teachers will be asked to wear funny or embarrassing face coverings throughout a day if we reach our $450 classroom goal and Principal Schommer will wear one while live on Facebook if we reach our $10,000 overall goal while all students will enjoy an out of uniform day.

Past Read-A-Thon fundraisers raised money towards the purchase of a school bus, eagles nest renovations and PTO Gift and Grants Initiatives such as the new furniture in the art room. This year we will be raising money for shortfalls in the school budget, specifically supplementing teachers pay.

Please join the other dedicated parents of St. Monica students by supporting this year's Read-A-Thon. More information will come home on Tuesday, January 19th.

Parent Response Support

Recently, our country has seen historical events unfold on the news. It has left many of us parents and caregivers feeling anxious, angry, or even scared.  While parents and caregivers continue to process these disturbing events, kids are also trying to make sense of what they are seeing and hearing. Have they asked questions and you are unsure as to how to respond? Do you wonder how much information to give them? Below you will find an article from kidshealth.org in both English and in Spanish with helpful tips on how to talk to your children about the news.

COVID and YOU

We have had a successful first ½ of the school year in terms of positivity within our building. To keep that trend we need your help.

  • Follow protocol: Wash hands with soap & water, wear a Mask, & stay 6 feet apart
  • Everyone stays home if anyone has symptoms
  • If you are not sure, email nurse@smsindy.org

If we all follow these 3 actions we will be successful.
